The University of Rwanda (UR) is Rwanda’s oldest and most ambitious university.UR has had more than 49 years’ experience in meeting the growing needs of the economy and society by delivering high-calibre education in Rwanda. The University is known for its innovative and leading-edge research, and this reputation means UR attracts talented and highly respected academic staff from around the world.
UR has many research centres on campus as well as many partnerships and links within Rwanda and internationally. Much of UR’s research is in response to current issues. Several standard postgraduate courses are offered together with a varied range of research programmes leading to postgraduate awards.
The UR Postgraduate programmes are meant to equip cadres with skills to participate in the development of the nation by carrying out problem-solving research. In addition, these programmes will make it possible to train a critical mass of qualified personnel at a lower cost compared to that of training abroad and will limit the brain drain. Therefore, UR has made Development of post graduate studies as one of the strategic goals of the University. The programmes were implemented in accordance with the UR mission and vision which are:
. To generate and disseminate high quality multi-disciplinary knowledge and promote effective research, skills training and community service for national competitiveness and sustainable socio-economic development, and
. To become an innovative, world class and self-sustainable University that is responsive to national, regional and global challenges.
The UR is responsible for nearly all the Masters programmes in the country. Masters provision has been increased dramatically in the past three years, from nine programmes in 2006 to nineteen at present, with many more due to come on line very shortly.
This expansion of provision should meet most of our own training needs and also help to meet the training needs of Government, the NGOs and industry and commerce.
To reinforce its capacities in fundamental and applied research and in order to better contribute to finding the solutions to the problems facing the community, the University of Rwanda is expanding its mode of delivery of Master’s programmes by using modern technologies and reaching the students where they are in the country.
Postgraduate programmes are now run from Butare and Kigali Campuses. They provide students with many opportunities to collaborate with, and learn from, partners in Government, the public sector, science and technology organizations and with the local business community, with its strengths in information technology and the creative industries.

i. LLM Business Law :
The Faculty of Law runs a masters programme in Business Law in Kigali. The programme aims at responding to pressing needs of getting business law specialists. Banks, insurance companies, the Bar Association and other institutions from both public and private sectors need qualified personnel able to make their services more performing and competitive.

ii. Master of Arts in Development Studies
The course aims at developing a systematic understanding of the policy process and its application to sustained economic and social development in transitional economies like Rwanda, particularly in the context of Poverty Reduction, and the long term welfare of the population and good governance.
The students will be equipped with skills to approach development problems with confidence and knowledge and have the ability to work collaboratively with others to identify solutions to national problems, bearing in mind that there are development challenges that may be unique for Rwanda. However, the students will also be exposed to global development challenges.

iii. Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies
The African Great Lakes Region is victim of socio-ethnic and political conflicts that have been undermining peace processes and development initiatives within the respective communities. Rwanda is as an epicentre the instability prevailing within the African Great Lakes Region. In order to make the sub region of African Great lakes Region safer and peaceful, the National University of Rwanda’s Centre for Conflict Management embarks on regional policy programs especially in the fields of peace and conflict resolution.
The Master’s Program in Peace and Development Studies comes to help academicians, stakeholders and other decision makers in the areas of Peace and Development to get useful knowledge in order to fully accomplish their tasks of making the Region safer.
The Program will also allow different beneficiaries from the Great Lakes Region and worldwide to catalyse peace building initiatives and Development capacities within their communities and countries. The Vision of the Master Program in Peace and Development Studies is to have a safer and peaceful African Great Lakes Region through providing an advanced education in peace and development skills for understanding and managing various conflicts.
The primary aim of the Program is to contribute to long term peace building capacity by training the next generation, future owners of the in the Great Lakes region’s destiny.

iv. Master of Arts in Genocide studies and Prevention
There is insufficient academic expertise and in-depth knowledge of key aspects of genocide as well as on mechanisms of genocide prevention. The lack of a solid expertise base in society also means that decision makers do not have access to the best advice or support from the largest pool of stakeholders and staff. And yet, such advice is particularly important in a field as sensitive as that of peace and conflict studies.
The unit on genocide studies and prevention works in order to contribute to this field so that researchers, policy makers and other agents get access to literature in the above mentioned field. It is in that perspective that CCM has recently validated masters programmes in Genocide Studies (with US support) and Peace and Conflict Management (with support from Sweden).

The programme is of international standards with faculty and staff drawn from Rwanda and abroad, including visiting professors, policymaker and practitioners in gender.
